Edmund L. Cortez, President and CEO of Alberston-based Abilities! received the Spirit of Long Island Social Issues and Community Service award for his outstanding contribution to the region. The award was presented at the twelfth annual Promote Long Island Spirit of Long Island breakfast.

'It is a great honor to be recognized by Promote Long Island and the community at large for doing what we do,'explained Mr. Cortez, 'this award is truly a show of support for all of our employees, volunteers and the participants in our programs. Without all of them, we would not be able to provide services to those who can most benefit from them.'

This recognition comes at a fitting time for Abilities! as it completes the re-branding transformation from its former moniker, the National Center for Disability Services. It is further appropriate as October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which recognizes the talents, skills, and dedication of workers with disabilities who are a vital part of the workforce. Training people with disabilities for working lives and equal treatment in all aspects of societal life is a major goal of Abilities!
