Suite Dreams Receives Half Million Dollar Grant

May 21, 2008

Albertson , NY –– On May 21st, Abilities! received a grant of $500,000 from the Hackett Foundation for its “Suite Dreams” Project. The goal of “Suite Dreams” is to transform the overcrowded, outdated medical facility at the Henry Viscardi School into a state-of-the-art medical suite that can better meet the increasingly complex healthcare needs of its students.

Over 200 medically frail students with severe physical disabilities and rare diseases attend the Henry Viscardi School (HVS). These students suffer from atypical forms of Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Hemophilia and other rare illnesses. By providing expert, individualized care throughout the day, HVS makes it possible for these medically frail students to attend public school rather than receive homebound instruction.

“The generosity of the Hackett Foundation along with a grant from The Gladys Brooks Foundation and proceeds from this year’s Reach for a Star Luncheon complete the funding needed to break ground on this urgent project” said Ed Cortez, President and CEO of Abilities!.  The school intends to complete the renovation by September 2009.
