Abilities, Inc. Receives $90,000 to expand award winning employment program

April 2008

OSI Pharmaceuticals has awarded Abilities, Inc. with a $90,000 grant which will allow us to renovate our Laboratory Assistant Training area, increasing the square footage from 6,000 to 13,000. The expanded space will enable us to increase the number of participants from 60 to 88 trainees per year.

The Laboratory Assistant Training program (LATT) was initiated in 1992 at Abilities, Inc. to meet the staffing needs of environmental, clinical, research, and pharmaceutical laboratories in the greater New York City/Long Island area.  This program was designed to meet the needs of companies and organizations that had laboratory facilities and were having difficulty recruiting and retaining entry-level staff to work in laboratory settings.

Our graduates have accepted job offers at a variety of companies such as: American Analytical Labs Inc., Cascade Water Services, Long Island Blood Services, North Shore, LIJ Health Systems, Queens Hospital Center, Quest Diagnostics, Inc. and Shiel Medical Laboratory.

Due to the success of this program it has been replicated in New York at Brookhaven National Laboratory with donated laboratory space and support, and in New Jersey through a grant from the Henry Kessler Foundation.
